The Art of Watercolour- Following the traces of time's passing.

 

I have an eight page feature in the Art of Watercolour magazine, 8th issue. If you haven't seen this magazine I thoroughly recommend you have a look. It has some excellent features as well as beautiful reproduced paintings. I was already a fan before my feature but I think they have done a marvellous job of representing my work and thoughts on painting and the processes I use. They also have a piece about the Zhujiajiao International watercolour Biennial in the Quahana gallery, Shanghai where the Art of the Real will be having an opening on Monday 15th October 2012.  The publication, Artists & Illustrators, October 2012 issue, page 61 carries a piece about my winning painting "Taking the Strain". There are notes on painting technique, subject matter and my likes and dislikes when it comes to painting with watercolour.. So much packed into one page, a bit like my work. I hope you enjoy it!

The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2012

 

I am extremely honoured to have  had my painting"Looking for the Sun" chosen for the flyer by the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2012.


Sponsored by Smith & Williamson and The Sunday Times, and with prizes worth £18,000 on offer, this prestigious competition is now in its 25th year. Hugely popular with artists, gallery visitors and readers of The Sunday Times, the competition continues to celebrate and reward excellence and originality in the medium of watercolour painting.

Prizes include a First Prize of £10,000, a Second Prize of £6,000 and the Smith & Williamson Cityscape Prize of £1,500. For the second year running, Random House will be generously sponsoring the Vintage Classics Prize for Cover Art, £500 and a commission to create a cover for a Vintage Classic.

I am very pleased to announce that after being invited to take part in the ‘International Prize “Marche d’Acqua” Fabriano Watercolour 2012’, I have been awarded first prize. A total of 51 artists from 15 different countries were invited to participate in the prize. As the sole Scot I am excited and honoured to have been recognised by such a prestigious International jury.

The Scottish painter Angus McEwan won the second edition of the ‘International Prize “Marche d’Acqua” Fabriano Watercolour 2012’ with the opera "Taking the Strain 2".

The success, therefore, went to the Scottish painter, as stated in the written jury, "... for extraordinary technical skill, for the masterful use of light and colour, for the excellent ability to understand and value the paper produced specifically for award from paper masters of the paper museum. "

The city of Fabriano has announced its second edition of the ‘International Prize “Marche d’Acqua” Fabriano Watercolour 2012’ an event that the Tourism Councillorship of the Municipality of Fabriano will open on June 2nd 2012, at the Paper and Watermark Museum. The museum is the ideal site to hold the Italian 2nd International Prize dedicated to Watercolour Art.
The winner of the Biannual watercolour Prize is Angus McEwan with the artwork “Taking the strain 2"

The biennial exhibition, conceived by the Paper and Watermark Museum in collaboration with InArte and Ava (Venetian Watercolour Association), will welcome renowned and internationally acclaimed artists.

The artists participating in the exhibition are 51 from all over the globe (15 different Countries) of which 21 are young emerging artists, selected by the ‘Accademie di Belle Arti Italiane’ and International Art Schools and Academy for their creativity.

The works of art will be exhibited and open to the public till August 26th at the new exposition gallery created within the Paper and Watermark Museum.

The exhibition will also exhibit a session dedicated to the works of art by the six Judging panel members of the “Marche d’Acqua” Prize and a special guest session dedicated to Pedro Cano's "Desnudos en el Papel".

"Marche D Acqua" Fabriano Watercolours 2012

 "Taking the Strain 2", watercolour on Fabriano, 77 x 56.5cm

I finally finished the painting which will be included in the up coming exhibition entitled International Prize "Marche DAcqua" Fabriano Watercolour 2012. Only 34 artists are selected world wide to take part in this Exhibition which will be shown in the Museo della Carta e della Filigrana (paper and Watermark Museum of Fabriano). The Exhibition will then travel to South Korea, Spain, Portugal, USA, etc. I am fairly pleased with the results as its the first time I've used the paper and I managed to complete it in 2 weeks which is pretty quick for me. I just hope the Organising committee enjoy it as much!

Saatchi Magazine

 The Saatchi Gallery Magazine, issue 16, Page 7,Winter 2011. Winsor and Newton have continued to use my work in their advertisment under the heading "Experiment with Tradition". An apt title as I do spend a lot of time exploring the limits of what is possible with Watercolour, but still like to remain "true" to the spirit of Realism. The painting "Chain Reaction" will be on show in M Gallery, Charleston, South Carolina in April 2012, and depicts an old door which I stumbled across in Havana, Cuba. I think the advert is superb, very elegant. Thanks for the support.

New video

Here is a recent video of my painting- 'Painted door of Marsaxlokk, Watercolour on Arches watercolour paper. If nothing else it shows how I hop around the picture plane working up the painting at the same time.

Mirror Image

Secrets in the shadows; watercolour; 50 x 42.5cm

Although a mirror is supposed to reflect truth, it also changes that which we look at. Similarly an artist who reflects on the world around him must also change and interpret his version of truth.

I value time and the way it affects everything. It reveals character within all that it touches. The worn beauty which is slowly coaxed out of peeling paint, rotten wood, rusted implements or wind torn rock appeals to me. I want to record them, but I also want to do so with emotion. I want to say something about my subject matter and as such embellish, change, modify, emphasise and sublimate in order to get my message across.

It is my interpretation of the subject and therefore like the mirror I may reflect upon that subject but at the same time I’m compelled to change it.

Cuba

This exhibition draws upon my experiences from a resource laden trip to Cuba. The neglect brought about by Political isolation creates an endless supply of superb source material for me. Havana is a living city, one which has not been cared for due to a lack of resources and finances. Never the less, she shows all the signs an aging beauty. Growing and expanding, but dowdy and still immensely proud, I found Havana foreboding at times but also friendly. Full of contradictions and packed full of source material, I found I was slightly overwhelmed at first, but once you start drawing, your focus returns and the important stuff comes into view.

Doors, gates, walls, pillars, signs and the interaction of Havana’s residents with the city became my focal point. Building on my past experiences from other trips I draw, draw, paint, photograph take notes and draw again, constructing a bank of knowledge which sustains me in the studio until my next expedition.

I will be back.

RWS in Malta

 I recently (last week) went to Malta with 6 other members of the RWS (Royal Watercolour Society) with a view to creating some work, which will be exhibited next year in England and Malta (Valetta). It was an extremely fruitful trip and I came away with a sketchbook full of ideas and many photographs. I thought it would be good to show some of the sketchbook here together, rather than in dribs and drabs on FB. Myself (Angus McEwan), President David Paskett, Jenny Wheatley, Michael Chaplin, George Devlin, Richard Bawden and Dennis Roxby Bott set about making sense of our surroundings. I was impressed by the variety of work, professionalism and general enthusiasm everyone displayed. It was a real pleasure to be involved with this small select group and I look forward to seeing the results next year. As you may notice this work is a lot looser for me due to the heat and time constraints, but this is a stepping stone to further work.

My new website is now up and running. For the eagle eyed amongst you, you will have noticed an address change. There is now a new web address and once the transition period is over, my previous address will take you to this site also. Hopefully you will also notice that its faster and less 'clunky' than the last one. Lots more images and a shop facility which uses paypal. If you come across something you like, let me know. Your feedback would be appreciated. I shall be adding galleries which will be grouped in terms of subject, but for the moment I decided to keep it nice and simple; work which is available to purchase and archive pieces. If you think something is missing, let me know. Anything you would like to see?

Hopefully this website will shed some light on what I've been up to recently.

There are lots of exciting things on the cards. The next couple of years are going to be extremely busy, hopefully very productive and very interesting!!!
